Mole Mapping

What is Mole Mapping?

Mole mapping is a non-invasive procedure that uses specialized imaging technology to take detailed, high-resolution images of the skin to help detect melanoma, a type of skin cancer.

The images are then analyzed by a dermatologist to identify any changes in moles or skin spots over time, which can help with early detection of melanoma. The images are stored in a digital database so that gradual changes can be detected.

What to expect

We will take images of your mole or skin lesion using a specialist, medical grade camera called a “dermoscope”. It uses light and magnification to help a dermatologist see how your skin looks in more detail than you would be able to see with a naked eye or normal camera. The detailed images will make it easier to spot abnormalities that may require further investigation or diagnostic tests.

Once we’ve taken images of your mole, we will send them to consultant dermatologist. The consultant will review the images and prepare a report for us so we can advise you on next steps.

Images are usually reviewed within 48 hours after we submit them for review. We can request that a copy of the report will be sent to you as soon as it’s ready, otherwise it will be sent to us in clinic, and we will contact you to discuss the report with you once we have received it.

Mole mapping is important for everyone, to be able to properly assess and monitor mole changes over time, and look for any suspicious lesions. However, people who are at increased risk of the development of skin cancer are strongly advised to have regular mole mapping. This includes those with:

  • Large number of moles

  • Moles that have an unusual appearance (atypical moles)

  • A family history of skin cancer

  • A personal history of skin cancer

  • Pale skin that easily burns in the sun

  • Episodes of previous severe sun burn

  • Exposure to significant amounts of sunlight like working or living abroad or outdoor work

  • A suppressed immune system

If a concerning mole is imaged the dermatologist will inform the patient providing them with a report that can be sent to their GP to speed up any referral.
